Let’s break down a popular post that resulted in higher art sales.

The Anatomy of my Viral Video

I am often asked about how I decide what kind of videos to make to market my art.

I’ve found that there are a few things that have worked well for me over the last year, and among the best are “before and after reveal” videos.

So today I wanted to actually break down one of my most recent successful TikTok videos.

It has generated roughly 2.2 million views at the time of this newsletter's publishing and has netted me about 20 serious purchase or commission inquiries. So, let’s take a look at my video.

You can view it here before I discuss it.

I want to start off by saying that nobody knows what will take off in today's internet culture, but my before and after videos have had a higher rate of success than other things I have tried.

While I often use some of the same footage for my videos I try to add in at least one new component each time.

I’m always looking for good music for a reveal. Music is important in video based social media, TikTok especially, because having a sound that makes the audience wait for a result works in your favor. It holds suspense and keeps the viewer engaged.

When I heard the sound of Eminem’s “Venom,” I knew it would make for a good reveal… and it did.

I edited the video to time properly with the music, and I think the suspense and timing helped with the popularity of this post.

I chose text that are statements I believe to be true while also thinking that they would generate a response…. or potentially controversy.

That’s because controversy tends to breed popularity. Comments and shares will help get your video in front of more eyes and that gives you more opportunity for sales.

While I often deal with a high level of anger and negativity, I also generate conversations about art and there are plenty of wonderful people that come to my defense.

It is always important to remember the end goal… getting my art out there!
